A Mass Communication student of Federal Polytechnic, Mubi, in Adamawa State, Jemima Shetima Balami, has allegedly committed suicide by consuming a poisonous substance after her boyfriend announced that he was no longer interested in the relationship.
Balami, as the time of committing suicide, was a Diploma Two female student doing industrial attachment with Adamawa State Television, Yola, Adamawa State capital.
The boyfriend, it was gathered, a lecturer with the Modibbo Adama University, Yola.
The female student, who hails from Garkida, in Gombi Local Government Area of Adamawa State, died at her residence in Vinikilang, a Riverside community near the state capital, Yola.
The 24-year-old Jemima is said to be the only daughter of her father.
Confirming the sad development on Monday to newsmen, the state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Suleiman Nguroje, said the father of the deceased reported the matter to the police.
“The father of Jamima reported that she committed suicide by taking a deadly substance. Another version had it that she visited her boyfriend, a lecturer at Modibbo Adama University, Yola, and was told to quit the relationship. Angered by the news of exiting her boyfriend, the deceased took poison,” Nguroje said, adding that the matter would be duly investigated.
