The Nigerian Army has confirmed that the explosion at a mosque in Borno State on Wednesday, December 24, 2025, was the work of a Boko Haram suicide bomber.
The blast happened during the Maghrib prayer at Al-Adum Jumaat Mosque in the Gamboru Market area of Maiduguri, killing several worshippers and leaving many others injured.
Army authorities said the attacker detonated an improvised explosive device inside the mosque, leading to multiple casualties and causing panic in the area.
Speaking on Thursday, the Theatre Command spokesperson of Operation Hadin Kai, Lt. Col. Sani Uba, said findings from initial investigations showed that a Boko Haram terrorist carried out the attack.
“Preliminary findings indicate the incident was caused by a suspected Boko Haram terrorist (BHT) suicide bomber, who detonated an improvised explosive device, killing himself and two civilians on the scene,” he said.
He explained that troops, alongside the police explosive unit, other security agencies, the Borno State Government and NEMA, quickly moved in to secure the area and prevent further danger.
According to him, victims were rushed to the General Hospital and the Teaching Hospital in Maiduguri for treatment. He confirmed that 32 civilians sustained different levels of injuries.
“Two of the injured civilians were later confirmed dead at the hospital, while two others are currently in critical condition,” he said.
“The remaining injured persons are stable and receiving appropriate medical care.”
Lt. Col. Uba also assured residents that security has been strengthened across Maiduguri and nearby communities, adding that surveillance and patrols have been increased to ensure safety during the festive period.
