Manchester United have dismissed head coach Ruben Amorim, the club confirmed on Monday, January 5, 2026, following a sudden decision at Old Trafford.
Amorim, who took charge of the Red Devils in November 2024, was relieved of his duties after growing concerns over the team’s performances and comments he made that revealed internal issues within the club.
At the time of his exit, Manchester United were sixth on the Premier League table. His dismissal came less than 24 hours after he openly criticised the club’s leadership during a post-match press conference following a 1–1 draw with Leeds United, a move that reportedly angered top officials.
Sources close to the club said the management acted quickly after the interview, where Amorim questioned his authority and role, increasing pressure on the Portuguese coach less than two seasons into his tenure.
In a club statement, United said, “Ruben Amorim has departed his role as Head Coach of Manchester United.
“Ruben was appointed in November 2024 and led the team to the UEFA Europa League final in Bilbao in May.
“With the club currently sitting sixth in the Premier League, the leadership has reluctantly decided that this is the right time to make a change in order to give the team the best chance of finishing strongly.
“The club thanks Ruben for his service and wishes him well in the future.
“Darren Fletcher will take charge of the team for Wednesday’s match against Burnley.”
Manchester United are expected to appoint an interim manager while the search for a permanent replacement begins.
