Suspected gunmen have abducted the principal of Government Secondary School, Odo-Ekina, four students writing the ongoing National Examinations Council (NECO) examination and a NECO ad hoc official during an attack on the school in Dekina Local Government Area of Kogi State.
The attack occurred at about 5:25 p.m. on Tuesday, July 14, 2026, while candidates were sitting for their examination. The assailants stormed the school and whisked away the victims before security operatives could intervene.
Confirming the incident, the Kogi State Police Command said the abducted victims include the school principal, four students and one NECO ad hoc staff member.
Police spokesperson, ASP Salisu Oyiza, said a joint team of police officers and other security agencies immediately launched a search-and-rescue operation following the attack.
She disclosed that one of the abducted students has since been rescued, while efforts are ongoing to secure the release of the remaining victims and apprehend those responsible for the attack.
According to the command, the Commissioner of Police, Naziru Kankarofi, alongside the Brigade Commander and the Kogi State Security Adviser, visited the school for an on-the-spot assessment of the situation and to coordinate ongoing rescue efforts.
The latest attack has heightened concerns over the safety of schools and examination centres, especially as candidates continue to sit for this year’s NECO examinations across the country.
Security agencies assured parents and residents that every available resource is being deployed to rescue the remaining victims safely and bring the perpetrators to justice.
