Nigeria’s leading universities may have topped the country’s latest Webometrics ranking, but the results also reveal the wide gap between the nation’s institutions and the world’s top universities.
The University of Ibadan emerged as Nigeria’s highest-ranked institution, followed closely by the University of Lagos. The University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Covenant University and Landmark University completed the country’s top five.
Despite leading the Nigerian table, UI was placed 1,291st globally, while UNILAG ranked 1,355th among more than 32,000 institutions assessed worldwide.
The ranking also placed the University of Ilorin, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ahmadu Bello University, University of Port Harcourt and the Federal University of Technology, Akure among Nigeria’s top 10 institutions.
At the global level, however, Harvard University, Stanford University, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the University of Oxford and the University of Washington maintained their positions among the world’s leading institutions.
The latest ranking therefore presents two sides of Nigeria’s university system: strong competition among local institutions but a continuing struggle to close the gap with the world’s academic powerhouses.
Webometrics measures institutions based on factors including their online visibility, accessibility of academic materials and research impact.
While UI and UNILAG can celebrate their positions at the top of the Nigerian table, the latest figures underline the larger challenge facing the country’s universities turning local academic strength into greater global competitiveness.
