The remains of veteran Nollywood actor Taiwo Hassan, popularly known as Ogogo, will be laid to rest today, Monday, August 24, 2026, in his hometown of Ilaro, Ogun State, following his death at the age of 66.
Hassan died at about 3pm on Sunday, August 23, after a prolonged battle with cancer. His death came only days after his daughters, Kira and Lima Taiwo, publicly appealed for medical assistance as the actor’s health deteriorated.
According to a burial announcement shared by veteran actor Jide Kosoko, Ogogo’s remains were taken to Ilaro on Sunday, ahead of the funeral arrangements.
The Ilaro Muslim Community announced that the burial prayer will take place at the Asade Agunloye Pavilion Ground at 10am today, with the Chief Imam of Ilaro listed as the announcer.
The burial follows an emotional weekend for Ogogo’s family, colleagues and admirers. His daughters had spent the final days of his illness seeking medical help after revealing that their father was battling stage-four cancer.
The appeal generated a strong response from the entertainment industry, with actors and other public figures rallying around the family and seeking medical professionals who could assist with his treatment. Among those who publicly offered support were Femi Adebayo, Toyin Abraham and Jide Kosoko.
Ogogo’s death has since triggered widespread tributes across the Yoruba film industry and beyond, with colleagues remembering him as one of the actors who helped shape the growth of Yoruba-language cinema over several decades.
Born Taiwo Hassan in Ilaro, Ogun State, on October 31, 1959, the actor began his acting career in 1981. Before concentrating fully on acting, he worked as an automobile mechanic and later spent about 13 years with the Lagos State Water Corporation. He eventually left the government job in 1994 to pursue acting full-time.
His career spanned more than four decades, during which the name Ogogo became widely recognised among audiences of Nigerian Yoruba films.
As family, friends, colleagues and fans gather in Ilaro today, the veteran actor’s final journey will bring to an end the life and career of a performer whose name became firmly established in Nigeria’s entertainment history.
