The Abia State Police Command has launched an investigation into the death of a community leader, Mr. Igwe Akwu, in Okon-Aku Community, Ohafia Local Government Area, last Friday.
DSP Maureen Chinaka, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, said on Monday that peace has been restored in the community, and some suspects have been arrested in connection with the incident.
According to her, the Commissioner of Police, CP Danladi Isa, immediately deployed officers from Ohafia Divisional Headquarters and two tactical teams to the area to restore law and order.
“Four injured victims were rushed to the hospital and are receiving treatment, while one person was killed. Peace has now returned to the community. Residents have been urged to stay calm, avoid violence, and let the law take its course,” the statement read.
Chinaka added that the arrested suspects are undergoing questioning and will be taken to court once the investigation is complete. Meanwhile, traditional rulers of Ohafia, under the Council of Ohafia Monarchs, condemned the crisis that led to Mr. Akwu’s death.
In a statement signed by the Udumeze of Ohafia Ancient Kingdom, His Royal Paramountcy Ezie Ohamoha, Elder Awa Udonsi, the royal fathers said there was no excuse for the murder of a young Ohafia man, regardless of provocation.
“The arson that followed is also strongly condemned. No real progress can happen in an environment of violence. We appeal to Ndi Owom and Ndi Uma Compounds to put aside their differences. The Council, alongside security agencies, is committed to finding a lasting solution to stop further conflict,” the statement read.
