Abdulrasheed Maina, former chairman of the now-defunct Pension Reform Task Team (PRTT), was rushed to a private hospital in Abuja on Tuesday after collapsing outside his office, his media aide confirmed.
According to Maina’s assistant, Emmanuel Nweke, the incident occurred when Maina lost his balance while trying to enter the office, fell on the staircase, and struck his head. He reportedly passed out immediately after the fall.
Nweke explained that the collapse was linked to complications from a longstanding knee injury that Maina had not fully treated. “The fall happened as a result of problems with his knee, which caused him to lose balance and hit his head on the staircase,” he said.
Medical personnel at the scene quickly provided first aid before Maina was transported to the hospital for urgent care. He is currently under observation and receiving close medical attention.
The aide added that one of the doctors attending to Maina suggested that an air ambulance may be needed if his condition does not stabilise soon. Maina’s family and medical team are closely monitoring his health and have appealed to the public for privacy and prayers.
Maina recently completed a prison sentence at Kuje Correctional Centre after being convicted of pension fraud involving over ₦2 billion. His conviction was upheld by the Court of Appeal in May 2023.
He was first arraigned by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in October 2019, facing a 12-count charge, to which he pleaded not guilty. Justice Okon Abang ruled that Maina misappropriated pension funds intended for retirees, many of whom passed away without benefiting from their pensions.
During his trial, Maina’s health was a concern. On several occasions, he had to be assisted by prison wardens in court, and medical evaluations were conducted to determine his condition.
This is not the first time Maina has collapsed in public. He previously slumped in court during his trial in December 2020, highlighting ongoing health issues.
Maina’s current hospitalisation has reignited public attention on his past legal troubles and health challenges. Supporters have called for understanding and prayers as he receives treatment.
