The Brazilian forward scored the decisive goal in the first-leg encounter, but the match was overshadowed by claims that Benfica’s Gianluca Prestianni directed racist abuse at him during the game.
Vinicius later took to social media to address the incident, describing racists as cowards and lamenting that such experiences were not new to him or his team. He stressed that those responsible often feel protected by others who fail to hold them accountable.
Several prominent football figures publicly condemned the alleged abuse. Kylian Mbappe described the behaviour as unacceptable and damaging to world football. Trent Alexander-Arnold commended Vinicius for his resilience, noting that he has consistently handled similar situations with strength.
Alvaro Arbeloa emphasised the need to confront racism in the sport, while Thierry Henry shared his personal experience of feeling isolated when targeted, expressing solidarity with Vinicius. Wayne Rooney also criticised the backlash over the player’s goal celebration, describing the persistence of racism in football as deeply saddening.
Clarence Seedorf rejected any attempt to justify racial abuse, insisting that such behaviour must never be excused. Jamie Carragher echoed the sentiment, stating that celebrations cannot serve as justification for racist remarks.
Theo Walcott called for swift action against perpetrators, stressing that players should not have to endure hostile environments while performing at the highest level. Alan Shearer expressed regret that the focus had shifted from Vinicius’ talent and goal to the controversy.
