President Bola Tinubu has accepted the resignation of Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun and appointed Tunji Disu as Acting IGP.
Egbetokun submitted his resignation on Tuesday, citing urgent family matters, and stepped down before completing his four-year term, which began in June 2023 and was scheduled to end in June 2027.
The President, through his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, expressed appreciation for Egbetokun’s service, highlighting his dedication, professionalism, and efforts to strengthen internal security during his tenure.
Acting on legal guidance and current security challenges, Tinubu approved Disu, a senior police officer with operational experience and proven leadership, to provide steady direction for the Nigeria Police Force.
Disu’s appointment as Acting IGP is effective immediately, ensuring continuity in the leadership of the police during this critical period.
The statement noted that, under the Police Act 2020, the President will convene the Nigeria Police Council to formally consider Disu for substantive IGP, after which his nomination will be sent to the Senate for confirmation.
Tinubu reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to enhancing national security and strengthening institutional capacity across the country.
He emphasized that the Nigeria Police Force will continue to operate professionally, remain accountable, and be fully equipped to perform its constitutional duties.
The transition marks a key development in police leadership as the nation navigates ongoing security challenges.
