Days of fear and uncertainty finally came to an end in Kogi State after authorities confirmed the rescue of victims kidnapped from an orphanage in Lokoja.
The victims were freed during a coordinated operation involving troops of the Nigerian Army and other security agencies after intense search efforts across forest areas in the state.
According to the Kogi State Government, the remaining victims were rescued from the Agbaja forest axis and immediately taken for medical attention following the operation.
The kidnapping had earlier caused panic after armed men attacked the Daarul-Kitab Islamic Orphanage in Zariagi, abducting children and adults from the facility late at night.
Initial rescue efforts led to the recovery of several victims shortly after the attack, while security forces continued operations to locate those still in captivity.
State officials praised the efforts of security operatives, describing the rescue as a major breakthrough in the fight against kidnapping and violent crime in the region.
Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo also commended the military and other agencies involved, saying the state would continue strengthening its security network to prevent similar attacks.
The incident also raised fresh concerns over the safety of schools and orphanages operating in isolated areas without proper registration or security coordination with authorities.
Officials revealed that investigations are ongoing and efforts have intensified to track down those responsible for the abduction and bring them to justice.
Security analysts say the successful rescue may restore some confidence among residents, though concerns about recurring kidnappings in parts of northern Nigeria remain high.
As families reunite with the rescued victims, many residents are now calling for tighter protection around vulnerable institutions to stop future attacks before they happen.
