Fresh political uncertainty has emerged around former President Goodluck Jonathan as a Federal High Court prepares to hear a case challenging his eligibility to contest the 2027 presidential election.
The legal action comes at a time when growing calls from supporters and youth groups are pushing the former leader to consider a return to active politics.
Jonathan recently hinted that he may be open to the idea but stressed that any decision would only come after broad consultations, describing the presidency as “not a computer game.”
The suit before the court argues that Jonathan may have already exhausted the constitutional limit for the office after completing the late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua’s tenure and later serving a full elected term.
The plaintiff is asking the court to stop him from contesting and also prevent the Independent National Electoral Commission from accepting his name as a candidate if he decides to run.
Although Jonathan has not officially declared for the race, the growing speculation around his possible comeback has already triggered political debates across party lines.
During a recent meeting with supporters in Abuja, the former president also spoke about the need for peaceful and credible elections, warning that many capable Nigerians avoid politics because of distrust in the electoral process.
He further challenged young Nigerians to become more active in elections by registering and voting instead of only demanding political change from leaders.
The case is expected to become one of the earliest major legal battles linked to the 2027 elections, especially if Jonathan eventually decides to formally join the race.
Political analysts say the outcome could shape future interpretations of constitutional term limits and influence how former presidents approach possible comebacks.
As the court hearing begins, attention is now fixed on whether the legal challenge will slow down the growing momentum around Jonathan’s possible return to the political stage.
