A Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered that human rights activist and politician, Omoyele Sowore, be remanded at the Kuje Correctional Centre as he faces trial over allegations bordering on cybercrime.
The case, filed by the Department of State Services (DSS), centres on claims that Sowore made online statements considered to be in breach of Nigeria’s Cybercrimes Act.
According to the charges, the prosecution alleges that the activist used digital platforms to publish content deemed offensive and capable of inciting public unrest against government officials.
During court proceedings, the prosecution urged the court to remand him pending the continuation of the trial, while his legal team reportedly opposed the request and sought bail conditions.
After hearing arguments from both sides, the court ruled that Sowore should remain in custody at Kuje prison until the matter is further mentioned.
The ruling has generated widespread attention due to Sowore’s profile as a prominent activist and former presidential candidate known for his outspoken criticism of government policies.
Court officials maintained tight security around the premises as the proceedings drew supporters, journalists and observers monitoring the high-profile case.
Sowore has consistently denied the allegations, insisting that his online posts are protected under freedom of expression and political speech.
The case is expected to continue as the court considers further evidence and legal arguments from both the prosecution and defence.
For now, Sowore remains in custody as the cybercrime trial progresses through the Nigerian judicial system.
