President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has pledged all his salaries since assuming office to support members of the Armed Forces as he marked his 74th birthday.
The President announced the decision while unveiling a special fund aimed at assisting injured soldiers and families of those who died in service to the country.
He said the initiative would be backed by a dedicated account to be created by the Accountant-General of the Federation, ensuring proper funding and management of the scheme.
According to him, the fund will provide direct support to personnel wounded in the line of duty, as well as dependants of fallen soldiers.
Tinubu also confirmed that his personal earnings since taking office will serve as the initial contribution to kick-start the programme.
He called on governors, lawmakers, private sector players, and other stakeholders to contribute to the initiative, stressing the need for collective responsibility.
The President emphasised that supporting military personnel is a national duty, not an act of charity, given the risks they take to protect the country.
He noted that the welfare of soldiers and their families must remain a priority, regardless of existing insurance or support systems.
The announcement formed part of activities to mark his birthday, which he chose to observe in a low-key manner.
The move has drawn attention as a major gesture aimed at improving the welfare of Nigeria’s military personnel and honouring their sacrifices.
