The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, has resigned from the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu ahead of the 2027 governorship election in Bauchi State.
His resignation comes as he prepares to contest for the governorship seat under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Sources revealed that Tuggar submitted his resignation letter on Monday around noon, in line with a presidential directive requiring political appointees seeking elective positions to step down before March 31, 2026.
The directive was issued earlier in March and communicated through the office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume.
It mandates all affected officials, including ministers and aides, to resign before participating in the upcoming election process.
Tuggar’s move is expected to change the political landscape in Bauchi State, where several aspirants are already preparing for the governorship race.
His entry into the contest is likely to increase competition within the APC as party members position themselves for the ticket.
Observers believe his experience as a minister and diplomat may give him an advantage in terms of national exposure and political connections.
The directive aligns with the provisions of the Electoral Act, 2026, as well as the timetable released by the Independent National Electoral Commission for the 2027 elections.
It applies to top government officials, including ministers, advisers, and heads of federal agencies.
With the deadline fast approaching, more resignations are expected from members of the cabinet who have political ambitions.
