Fresh indications from the ruling party show that the All Progressives Congress (APC) has approved a special arrangement that exempts President Bola Ahmed Tinubu from the usual screening process ahead of its 2027 presidential primaries.
Party sources say the decision is tied to the widespread endorsement Tinubu has already received from major party organs, which have openly backed his second-term ambition.
Under normal APC rules, aspirants are expected to undergo screening before being cleared for primaries, but the latest move effectively clears the President to proceed directly in the race without facing that hurdle.
The development comes as the party continues to fine-tune its timetable for the 2027 elections, with other aspirants still expected to follow full procedures, including screening and primary contests.
Party officials insist the adjustment does not shut out competition but reflects what they describe as Tinubu’s “automatic backing” within the party structure, which has been building since his first year in office.
Critics, however, see the move as a sign of internal consolidation around the President, suggesting the APC may be moving toward a near-unopposed primary process for its flagbearer.
The revised arrangement follows earlier indications that while the party remains open to other contenders, its leadership has already thrown its weight behind Tinubu’s re-election bid.
Political watchers say the decision could reshape the dynamics of the APC primaries, reducing uncertainty around the party’s presidential ticket ahead of 2027.
As preparations continue, attention is now shifting to how other aspirants within the party will respond to a process that appears increasingly tilted in favour of the incumbent.
