Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has thrown his weight behind Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat as the preferred candidate to succeed him in the 2027 governorship race, setting the tone for early political alignment within the ruling party in the state.
The endorsement came after a strategic meeting held at Lagos House, Marina, where Hamzat formally informed top government officials and party leaders of his decision to run for governor. The gathering included members of the State Executive Council and influential stakeholders within the All Progressives Congress.
Following the meeting, Sanwo-Olu made it clear that the decision to back Hamzat was not personal but a collective position agreed upon by those present. He said the deputy governor has demonstrated strong capacity and readiness to take over leadership of the state.
The governor pointed to Hamzat’s years of experience in governance and their close working relationship, describing him as dependable and fully grounded in the operations of Lagos State. According to him, Hamzat has consistently shown dedication and loyalty while serving in his current role.
Sanwo-Olu also acknowledged the role of President Bola Tinubu in shaping the political journey that brought both him and Hamzat into leadership, noting that their partnership is part of a broader vision that continues to unfold.
He added that Hamzat possesses the qualities required to lead effectively, stressing that his competence and understanding of governance make him a strong candidate for the job ahead.
Party leaders present at the meeting reportedly supported the move, describing it as a well-thought-out step that reflects unity within the party as preparations for the next election cycle begin to take shape.
With this endorsement, political activities ahead of the 2027 elections in Lagos appear to be gaining momentum, as the ruling party begins to position itself early for the contest.
