Hull City announced their return to the Premier League in memorable fashion, defeating Manchester United 2-0 in their opening game of the new season and handing Michael Carrick’s side a disappointing start.
The Tigers made their first Premier League appearance in nine years one to remember, producing an energetic and disciplined display at the MKM Stadium to secure a famous victory over one of English football’s biggest clubs.
Hull City took control of the match in the first half, with Semi Ajayi opening the scoring before Nobel Mendy doubled the advantage. Both goals exposed weaknesses in Manchester United’s defending from set pieces and left the visitors with a mountain to climb before the break.
Manchester United came into the new season with fresh expectations under Carrick, who had taken the team to a third-place finish last season before being appointed permanently. The club had also strengthened its midfield with the arrivals of Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos.
However, the new-look side struggled to find rhythm against a Hull team determined to make its return to the top flight count. United failed to make a breakthrough despite making changes in the second half, including the introduction of Marcus Rashford, who was making his first competitive appearance for the club in about 20 months.
The defeat marked Hull City’s first-ever league victory over Manchester United, adding another historic chapter to what was already a glorious return to the Premier League for the home side.
Speaking after the match, Carrick admitted that the result was far from the start Manchester United wanted and accepted that his players had areas of their game that needed to be corrected and improved.
The United coach, however, appealed to the club’s supporters not to lose faith in the team, stressing that the defeat came in only the first game of a long Premier League season.
Carrick maintained that there was still enough time for Manchester United to respond, improve and change the direction of their campaign, but said the players would need the continued backing of the fans.
For Hull City, the afternoon was a celebration of a dream return after nearly a decade away from the Premier League. For Manchester United, it was an early setback that has immediately put Carrick and his players under pressure to produce a response in their next match.
