*ABSIEC commences sale of Nomination Forms

Local Government elections will hold in Abia State on Friday, April 28, 2023, the state’s electoral umpire, Abia State Independent Electoral Commission (ABSIEC) has announced.
ABSIEC Chairman, Prof Mkpa Agu Mkpa, who disclosed this in Umuahia, said that sales of Nomination Forms for Chairmanship and Councillorship positions commenced on Friday, January 20, 2023.
In a statement he personally signed, Mkpa indicated that sales of Nomination Forms would last for four weeks.
The Commission therefore invited political parties and their candidates who wish to participate in the Council elections to visit its headquarters to purchase the Nomination Forms, adding that other details regarding the conduct of the council election would be made available to all parties.
The statement reads: “In exercise of the powers conferred on her by PII, Third Schedule, Section 4, Sub-section (a) and (b) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended) and pursuant to Chapter 9, Section 180 of Abia State of Nigeria Local Government Law, No 2 of 2006.
“Notice is hereby given that the elections into Chairman and Councillorship positions in the 17 local government areas and 293 Electoral Wards of Abia State is published as follows:
“That the said elections will take place on Friday, 28th April, 2023, in all the 293 Electoral Wards and 17 Local Government Areas of Abia State.
“That Political Parties and their candidates who wish to participate in the forthcoming elections should proceed to the headquarters of the Abia State Independent Electoral Commission, Ogurube Layout, behind Central Bank of Nigeria, Umuahia for collection of Nomination Forms, not later than four weeks from the date of this publication.
“Other details relating to the conduct of the said election will be communicated to all parties concerned in due course.”
Recall that Governor Okezie Ikpeazu, while inaugurating new ABSIEC Commissioners recently, charged the Commission to come up with a proposal for conducting Council Polls before his administration exits office in May this year.
If the elections holds, it will be the third to be conducted by the Ikpeazu-led government.
