Nigeria made a flying start to its para powerlifting campaign at the 2026 Commonwealth Games after Esther Nworgu won the country’s first gold medal, leading an impressive medal haul for Team Nigeria in Glasgow.
Nworgu delivered a record-breaking performance in the women’s lightweight event, finishing with 119.0 points to set a new Commonwealth Games record and secure the top spot on the podium ahead of her rivals.
Fellow Nigerian Esther Oyema added to the country’s success by claiming the silver medal in the same event, giving Nigeria a one-two finish in the women’s lightweight category.
Nigeria’s dominance continued in the women’s heavyweight competition as Folashade Oluwafemiayo produced another outstanding display to win gold and set a new world record.
Her teammate Bose Omolayo also finished strongly to claim the silver medal, completing another one-two finish for Team Nigeria in the heavyweight category.
