Afrobeats star David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has appealed to United States President Donald Trump and the international community to pay close attention to the forthcoming Osun State governorship election.
The singer raised concerns over what he described as growing tension surrounding the election, warning about the possibility of violence, intimidation and disruption of the democratic process.
In his appeal, Davido said the people of Osun deserved the opportunity to vote freely and peacefully without fear, urging stakeholders to ensure that the election reflects the wishes of voters.
The intervention has attracted considerable attention because of Davido’s connection to Osun politics. His uncle, Governor Ademola Adeleke, is seeking another term in office in the election.
The musician’s decision to directly appeal to Trump has also generated debate, with some Nigerians questioning why a Nigerian election should involve the United States President.
Davido subsequently defended his decision, saying Trump is also his president because of his Nigerian-American background.
The singer’s concerns come just days before the scheduled August 15, 2026 Osun governorship election, in which Adeleke is facing APC candidate Bola Oyebamiji and other contenders.
Davido’s intervention has added to the growing national and international attention surrounding the poll, particularly over concerns about security, voter intimidation and the credibility of the electoral process.
He called for peace and transparency, making it clear that his appeal was centred on ensuring that voters are allowed to exercise their constitutional rights without intimidation.
