The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has alerted the public to planned campaigns of calumny orchestrated by politicians and interest groups with ties to suspects under investigation or facing prosecution.
According to the Commission, a network of politicians, academics, so-called civil society activists, and Nigerian fugitives abroad have been recruited to launch media attacks targeting EFCC Chairman Ola Olukoyede and the institution, alleging political bias in its operations.
The EFCC described the campaign as an attempt to intimidate the Commission and disrupt its mandate, warning that such efforts are likely to intensify as the political environment heats up ahead of the 2027 general election.
The Commission reiterated its commitment to a non-partisan stance, stressing that all politicians—whether in the ruling party or opposition—are subject to its investigations if implicated in corruption. It affirmed that operational decisions, including references to the presumption of innocence in court, are constitutionally guided and not intended to defend any individual or group.
EFCC further warned that attempts to pressure or blackmail the agency into revealing details of investigations involving politically exposed persons would not be tolerated. The Commission affirmed its resolve to pursue justice “without fear or favour” in the execution of its mandate.
