A 38-year-old man, Samuel Umeojili, on Monday,19 February, 2024 arraigned before an Ado-Ekiti Chief Magistrates’ Court presided over by Mr Saka Afunso for allegedly assaulting his wife.
The defendant, of No. 2, Idolofin Street, Ado-Ekiti, appeared in court on a two-count charge of assault and breach of peace.
Earlier, the Police Prosecutor, Inspector Olasunkanmi Bamikole, told the court that the defendant committed the offences on February 15 at about 09:00 am at No. 2, Idolofin Street, Ado-Ekiti.
Bamikole, who said the defendant assaulted his wife, one Okechukwu Umeojili, by beating her to a coma, also added that the defendant conducted himself in a manner likely to cause a breach of peace by turning his wife into a punching bag.
According to him, the offences contravene Sections 185 and 181 of the Criminal Law of Ekiti State, 2021.
The prosecutor asked the court to adjourn the case to enable him to study the file and assemble his witnesses.
The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges preferred against him while there was no counsel to defend him.
The Chief Magistrate, Afunso, who ruled that the offence was bailable under the law, consequently admitted the defendant to bail in the sum of N25 000, with one surety in like sum and then adjourned the case till February 29 for hearing.
