The pupils and teachers abducted by gunmen during coordinated attacks on three schools in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State have regained their freedom after spending nearly two months in captivity.
The victims, comprising 39 pupils and seven teachers, were released on Friday, bringing an end to weeks of anxiety for their families and residents of the affected communities.
The abduction occurred on May 15, 2026, when heavily armed bandits invaded Community Grammar School, Baptist Nursery and Primary School, and L.A. Primary School in the Ahoro-Esinle area of Oriire Local Government Area, whisking away the victims into a nearby forest.
The incident triggered widespread condemnation across the country, leading to protests by civil society groups and an indefinite strike by the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) in Oyo State, while parents and residents repeatedly demanded urgent government intervention.
Although the victims have now been freed, details surrounding the circumstances of their release were not immediately disclosed by security agencies or the Oyo State Government.
The release comes days after the Federal Government explained that security forces avoided launching a direct assault on the kidnappers because the bandits had threatened to kill the abducted pupils and teachers if troops advanced toward their hideout.
Earlier, the Oyo State Government had also dismissed reports that ransom was paid to secure the victims’ freedom, insisting that no payment was made during efforts to obtain their release.
Families of the released pupils and teachers are expected to reunite with their loved ones, while authorities are likely to carry out medical examinations and provide psychological support following their prolonged stay in captivity.
Security agencies have yet to announce whether any arrests were made in connection with the abduction, as investigations into the attack continue.
