A dispatch rider has been killed in Lagos after he reportedly confronted a group of suspected hoodlums who attempted to force him to pay illegal levies while he was on duty. The incident occurred along the Ikotun-Idimu Road in Alimosho Local Government Area, sparking outrage among commercial riders and residents.
The victim, identified as 32-year-old Emmanuel Jegede, was said to have been riding to deliver a package when he encountered the group. Witnesses said an argument broke out after he refused to hand over money, leading to a violent attack.
During the confrontation, the attackers allegedly forced him off his moving motorcycle, leaving him with severe injuries. Good Samaritans rushed him to a nearby hospital, where he was later confirmed dead.
The incident has renewed concerns over the activities of street gangs accused of harassing commercial motorcyclists, dispatch riders and other road users in parts of Lagos.
Police authorities confirmed that an investigation has commenced, adding that efforts are underway to identify and arrest those responsible for the killing.
Residents and members of the dispatch riders’ community have called on the Lagos State Government and security agencies to intensify action against criminal groups operating on major roads to prevent similar attacks.
Many commuters also appealed for stronger security patrols in vulnerable areas, saying frequent harassment and extortion by suspected hoodlums have become a growing concern.
Authorities urged members of the public with useful information about the attack to cooperate with investigators as efforts continue to bring the perpetrators to justice.
