Nigerian sprint sensation Samuel Ogazi has declared that winning his first senior international gold medal is only the beginning of his journey, saying his ultimate ambition is to become one of the greatest athletes in the history of track and field.
The 20-year-old made history at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow after storming to victory in the men’s 400 metres final, becoming the first Nigerian ever to win gold in the event. He crossed the finish line in 44.25 seconds, finishing ahead of Trinidad and Tobago’s Jereem Richards and South Africa’s Zakithi Nene.
Speaking after his landmark victory, Ogazi said he has no intention of stopping at Commonwealth Games success. According to him, his dream is to win Olympic and World Championship titles and establish himself among the greatest athletes the sport has ever produced.
The young Nigerian credited months of intense preparation and confidence for his outstanding performance, explaining that he remained calm throughout the race despite a slow start before producing a powerful finish that left his rivals behind.
Ogazi’s triumph capped a remarkable campaign in Glasgow, where he had already impressed by setting the fastest men’s 400m semi-final time in Commonwealth Games history before going on to claim the title in the final.
His victory also strengthened Nigeria’s athletics campaign at the Games and added another historic chapter to the country’s success in Glasgow, where Team Nigeria secured several medals across athletics, para powerlifting, wrestling and other events.
The University of Alabama athlete has enjoyed a breakthrough season, breaking Nigeria’s long-standing 400m national record earlier this year and establishing himself as one of the world’s fastest quarter-milers. His latest achievement has further raised expectations ahead of future global competitions.
With age still on his side and his confidence growing after his historic Commonwealth Games success, Ogazi believes the biggest moments of his career are still ahead, as he targets Olympic glory, world titles and a place among the legends of athletics.
