Uchechi Kanu Debunks Divorce Claim, Says Report Is False

Uchechi Okwu-Kanu, wife of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has denied reports alleging that she has filed for divorce, insisting that the claim is completely false.

Reacting to the report in a statement released on her verified X account on Friday, July 10, 2026, Uchechi described the publication as the work of individuals bent on spreading falsehood and creating unnecessary confusion about her family.

She said she has not instituted any divorce proceedings against her husband and urged Nigerians to disregard the report in its entirety.

According to her, there is no truth whatsoever in the claim, adding that those behind the publication deliberately fabricated the story to mislead the public and stir controversy.

Uchechi expressed disappointment over the circulation of unverified information, saying it was disturbing that some people would publish sensitive claims without making any effort to confirm their authenticity.

She urged members of the public to rely only on statements issued directly by her or through officially recognised channels, warning against believing rumours circulating on social media.

The IPOB leader’s wife also appreciated those who reached out to verify the report before reacting, describing such actions as responsible and encouraging others to always confirm information before sharing it.

Nnamdi Kanu, who has been in custody for years over terrorism-related offences, is currently serving a life sentence after he was convicted by the Federal High Court in Abuja in November 2025. He has since challenged the judgment and sentence before the Court of Appeal, where his appeal remains pending.

Uchechi maintained that the false divorce report would not distract her family, reiterating that there are no divorce proceedings between her and her husband.
