Top opposition figures including Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso on Wednesday joined a mass rally organised by the African Democratic Congress in Abuja.
The protest, tagged #OccupyINEC, was staged against recent decisions by the Independent National Electoral Commission, which opposition leaders claim threaten democracy and party independence.
The demonstration drew several prominent political figures and supporters who gathered at Maitama Roundabout, chanting and displaying placards in protest.
Participants criticised INEC’s decision to halt recognition of factions within the ADC leadership, describing it as interference in internal party affairs.
Speaking during the rally, Peter Obi urged Nigerians to defend democracy, warning against the emergence of a one-party system in the country.
Other political figures present included former governors, ministers, and party stakeholders who aligned with the protest’s message of electoral fairness and transparency.
The rally also featured symbolic acts, including singing Nigeria’s former national anthem as a sign of defiance by protesters.
The protest followed growing tensions over leadership disputes within the ADC and INEC’s stance on the matter, which has sparked widespread reactions across political circles.
Organisers said the demonstration was aimed at mobilising Nigerians to protect democratic institutions and demand accountability from the electoral body.
