The Anambra State Police Command has rolled out a major security sweep targeting the rising misuse of police and other security agency uniforms in the state. The new operation, officials say, is designed to choke off a pattern of impersonation that has been used to commit crimes and unsettle communities.
Announcing the crackdown in Awka the Commissioner of Police CP Ikioye Orutugu said recent internal reviews revealed that several unauthorised persons had been disguising as security operatives to intimidate citizens, obstruct lawful checks, and create confusion during enforcement activities. He noted that the Command had now approved a set of strict measures to restore order and ensure that anyone wearing a uniform can be properly identified.
According to the CP, “The new directives are designed to ensure proper identification of all security personnel on duty and to eliminate the activities of impersonators who intend to endanger public safety.” He added that anyone caught wearing, selling, or possessing security uniforms or accoutrements without approval “will face immediate arrest and prosecution.”
The Police Command has also directed all DPOs, tactical units, and patrol teams to scale up visibility policing and conduct identity verification for operatives encountered during field operations. Orutugu urged residents to stay alert and report suspicious individuals posing as security personnel, emphasising that the Command’s emergency contacts remain open for urgent complaints.
He encouraged the public to support the renewed efforts, stressing that “Security uniforms remain classified government property, and their unlawful possession constitutes a criminal offence.”
