A Borno State High Court has sentenced a farmer to 15 years imprisonment for allegedly concealing information related to Boko Haram activities, in a ruling that has drawn attention to Nigeria’s ongoing counterterrorism efforts.
The farmer was convicted after being accused of failing to disclose relevant information about the operations and movements of Boko Haram insurgents to security authorities, an offence prosecutors said contributed to the group’s activities in affected areas.
The court held that the defendant had knowledge of the activities of the terrorist group but did not report or share the information with appropriate security agencies as required under Nigeria’s anti-terrorism laws.
During the trial, prosecutors argued that timely disclosure of such information could have assisted security forces in preventing attacks or disrupting insurgent operations in the region.
The case was heard at a High Court in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, a state that has remained one of the epicentres of Boko Haram’s insurgency for over a decade.
The judge, in delivering the judgment, said the prosecution had proven its case beyond reasonable doubt and that the sentence was necessary to reinforce compliance with national security laws.
The ruling reflects Nigeria’s strict legal stance on terrorism-related offences, including not only direct involvement but also failure to report or concealment of critical security information.
Borno State has continued to experience repeated attacks linked to Boko Haram and its splinter groups, despite ongoing military operations in the North-East region.
Security experts say cases like this highlight the government’s increasing reliance on intelligence-driven prosecution as part of wider efforts to combat insurgency.
The convicted farmer is expected to serve the full 15-year sentence unless an appeal succeeds in a higher court.
