A Federal High Court in Abuja has granted activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore fresh bail in the sum of ₦200 million as his ongoing legal battle with the Department of State Services continues.
The court approved the new bail arrangement weeks after revoking Sowore’s earlier bail following his failure to appear during a previous court session.
Not fewer than two sureties are required for Sowore to regain freedom after the judge attached fresh conditions to the new bail granted during Tuesday’s proceedings in Abuja.
Justice Mohammed Umar ruled that one of the sureties must be a traditional ruler from Sowore’s community in Ondo State.
The court also directed that the second surety must own landed property within the Federal Capital Territory before the bail can be fully approved.
As part of the conditions, Sowore was ordered to submit his international passport to the Deputy Registrar of the court pending the conclusion of the case.
The activist is currently facing trial over allegations linked to cybercrime and criminal defamation following social media posts allegedly made against President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Reports showed that the court had earlier revoked Sowore’s self-recognition bail after he failed to attend a scheduled hearing earlier this month.
Following the latest ruling, the judge released Sowore to his legal team while ordering the prosecution to verify the submitted sureties.
The matter was later adjourned to July 6, when the court is expected to continue hearing the case as Sowore prepares to open his defence.
