The Federal Government has declared Thursday, March 19, and Friday, March 20, 2026, as public holidays to mark the celebration of Eid-el-Fitr. The festival signals the end of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.
The announcement was made by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, on behalf of the Federal Government.
According to a statement issued by the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Magdalene Ajani, the minister congratulated Muslim faithful on successfully completing the fasting period.
Tunji-Ojo praised the dedication shown by Muslims throughout the Ramadan fast and commended their commitment to spiritual reflection and discipline.
He urged Muslims to continue practicing the virtues of love, generosity, peace, tolerance and sacrifice that were emphasised during the holy month.
The minister also encouraged Nigerians to use the festive period to pray for peace, unity and progress in the country.
He noted that the celebration provides an opportunity for citizens to strengthen bonds with family, neighbours and the wider community.
Tunji-Ojo further advised people to celebrate the holiday responsibly while maintaining respect for others.
He also called on Nigerians to extend kindness and support to the less privileged during the celebration.
The Federal Government reaffirmed its commitment to promoting national unity and peaceful coexistence across the country.
