The Nigerian Senate has officially confirmed Hon. Justice Joseph Olubunmi Kayode Oyewole as a Justice of the Supreme Court of Nigeria.
His appointment follows a nomination sent by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to the Senate in late January 2026, in line with Section 231(2) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).
Justice Oyewole’s name was recommended by the National Judicial Council (NJC) during its 110th meeting on January 13, 2026. The NJC, led by Chief Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, endorsed him alongside other judicial nominees.
Prior to the confirmation, Justice Oyewole, who previously served as Presiding Justice of the Court of Appeal, Enugu Division, underwent screening by the Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters.
Senators praised his experience, professionalism, and integrity, noting his detailed 31-page curriculum vitae circulated before the screening.
The confirmation is part of ongoing judicial reforms by President Tinubu aimed at increasing the number of justices in the Court of Appeal and judges in the Federal High Court to help tackle case backlogs.
Legal experts and stakeholders welcomed the appointment, describing it as a positive step for strengthening Nigeria’s judiciary.
With his confirmation, Justice Oyewole is now empowered to sit on the nation’s highest court, contributing to decisions that shape legal precedents and interpret the Constitution.
