Security operatives have arrested a key suspect linked to a deadly attack on a community in Kogi State and recovered about 100 cattle believed to have been stolen during the incident, in what authorities described as a major breakthrough in the ongoing investigation.
The suspect was reportedly apprehended following intelligence-led operations launched after the attack, which left residents of the affected community in fear and renewed concerns over insecurity in parts of the state.
According to security sources, investigators were able to track the suspect to a hideout where he was arrested. The operation also led to the recovery of approximately 100 cattle allegedly rustled during attacks carried out by criminal gangs operating within the region.
Authorities believe the suspect played a significant role in coordinating activities connected to the attack and are currently expanding investigations to identify and apprehend other members of the group.
The recovered cattle have since been secured by security agencies pending efforts to reunite them with their rightful owners. Officials said the operation forms part of broader efforts to dismantle criminal networks involved in cattle rustling, kidnapping and violent attacks across Kogi and neighbouring states.
In recent years, cattle theft has become a major security challenge in several parts of northern and central Nigeria, often fueling conflicts between communities and contributing to wider insecurity.
Security agencies have intensified intelligence gathering and coordinated raids in response to the growing threat posed by armed gangs. These efforts have resulted in a series of arrests and recoveries of stolen livestock, weapons and other items linked to criminal activities.
Residents of the affected Kogi community welcomed the arrest, expressing hope that it would lead to the capture of other suspects and help restore confidence in local security efforts.
Police authorities assured the public that investigations are ongoing and vowed to ensure that everyone connected to the attack is brought to justice.
