President Bola Tinubu and First Lady Oluremi Tinubu on Saturday participated in the All Progressives Congress presidential primary in Lagos as the ruling party formally began its nationwide exercise ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The President and his wife voted at Ward E in Ikoyi, Lagos, where party supporters, security officials, and APC members gathered for the primary exercise. Video clips from the venue showed the couple arriving under tight security while supporters cheered and waved party symbols.
Speaking after casting his vote, Tinubu described the exercise as a strong example of internal democracy within the ruling party. He said the APC remained committed to allowing members participate freely in the political process while ensuring peaceful conduct during the primaries.
The President also praised party leaders and governors for their efforts in organising the primaries across different states. According to him, the exercise is aimed at strengthening party unity ahead of the next general elections.
Tinubu had earlier urged party members to embrace consensus where possible and avoid bitterness during the primaries. He warned against violence and unnecessary political tension, stressing that politics should not become a “do-or-die” affair.
The APC recently adjusted its election timetable and fixed the presidential primary for May 23 as part of preparations for the 2027 elections.
Across several states, reports of consultations, lobbying, and political negotiations continued as party members battled for tickets into governorship, National Assembly, and other elective positions.
The APC primaries are expected to continue nationwide in the coming days as the ruling party begins preparations for another major electoral contest.
