Three people have died while five others were rescued after a passenger bus plunged into the Ariyo River along Amuloko Road in Ibadan, Oyo State.
Emergency officials said the accident occurred when the bus lost control and veered off the road into the river.
The Oyo State Fire Services Agency confirmed that rescue teams were quickly deployed to the scene after receiving a distress call.
The Chairman of the agency, Maroof Akinwande, said the report of the accident was received on Wednesday.
According to him, the alert was made through a telephone call from a resident identified as Mrs Fadeke Yusuf.
He said firefighters immediately moved to the location of the incident to begin rescue operations.
On arrival, emergency responders discovered a Suzuki passenger bus with registration number LEW 484 XA from Osun State inside the river.
The vehicle was said to be carrying eight passengers at the time of the accident.
Rescue workers managed to pull five people out of the river alive during the operation.
The survivors were quickly transported to Ona-Ara Private Hospital in the Jegede area for medical treatment.
Meanwhile, the bodies of three victims were recovered from the river by the rescue team.
The remains were later handed over to police officers from the Ogbere Divisional Headquarters.
The team of officers was led by Aishat Ibrahim, an Assistant Superintendent of Police.
Officials attributed the accident to reckless driving and warned motorists to always observe road safety rules.
