Police operatives in Anambra State have reportedly killed two suspected kidnappers during an operation, with weapons and other items recovered from the scene.
The Anambra State Police Command said the two suspects were killed during a gun battle with operatives of the Rapid Response Squad along Eziowelle Road in Idemili Local Government Area on Wednesday.
Police spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said the operatives acted on intelligence that a group of suspected kidnappers and armed robbers had been sighted in the area.
According to the command, the police team moved to the location, but the suspects allegedly opened fire after sighting the operatives, leading to a gun duel.
Two of the suspects sustained fatal gunshot injuries during the exchange, while other members of the gang reportedly escaped with gunshot wounds.
The police said an AK-47 rifle with four live rounds, a pump-action gun and five live cartridges were recovered from the scene.
The Commissioner of Police, Nnanna Oji Ama, said the command would continue intelligence-led operations against kidnapping, armed robbery and other violent crimes across Anambra State.
Police have also launched a manhunt for the fleeing suspects as investigations continue.
