The Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, Blessing Agbebaku, has resigned from his position amid moves by lawmakers to impeach him.
Agbebaku’s resignation was confirmed by his media aide, Ivy Ebojele, who said further details surrounding his decision would be made public.
His exit came as some members of the Assembly reportedly moved to remove him from office.
Following Agbebaku’s resignation, the lawmaker representing Akoko-Edo Constituency I, Yekini Idiaye, emerged as the new Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly.
Idiaye, a third-term member of the Assembly, was elected to replace Agbebaku during the political shake-up in the House.
The new Speaker later said Agbebaku’s removal was linked to allegations of poor leadership, corruption and prolonged adjournments of the Assembly.
The development marks a major change in the leadership of the Edo State House of Assembly, with Idiaye now taking charge as Speaker.
