For some prospective corps members and their families, the excitement that usually comes with receiving a call-up letter has been replaced with anxiety over where they may be posted and whether they will be safe during the service year.
Some graduates have indicated plans to apply for redeployment if posted to areas they consider risky, while others said their families are putting pressure on them to remain closer to home because of security concerns.
The growing fear has also affected the original purpose of the NYSC scheme, which was established to promote national unity by encouraging young Nigerians to serve in different parts of the country and interact with people from diverse backgrounds.
