The Defence Headquarters has assured Nigerians of heightened security nationwide as the military steps up measures to deter attacks during the Christmas and New Year celebrations.
In a statement issued on Sunday, the Director of Defence Media Operations, Maj. Gen. Michael Onoja, said the Armed Forces of Nigeria had activated an expanded security framework, working closely with other security agencies to secure identified flashpoints and major routes across the country.
He disclosed that additional troops have been deployed to strategic locations, with special forces units and air assets placed on standby to enable swift responses to any threat. According to him, the measures are part of a coordinated effort to ensure citizens celebrate the festive season without fear.
Onoja explained that intelligence-led operations have been intensified, with increased aerial surveillance and monitoring to track the movement and communication of suspected criminal elements. He added that commanders across formations have been instructed to boost patrols, erect fortified checkpoints, and deepen cooperation with community leaders, vigilante groups and state security outfits.
The Defence Headquarters reiterated that safeguarding lives and property remains a top priority, stressing that the military will sustain pressure on criminal groups throughout the festive period. Citizens were urged to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious activities to nearby security formations, with assurances that all reports would be handled swiftly and confidentially.
The director also conveyed goodwill messages from the Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. O.O. Oluyede, wishing Nigerians a peaceful Christmas and a prosperous New Year, while calling for wide circulation of the security advisory.
Similarly, the Rivers State Police Command announced reinforced security arrangements across the state to ensure a calm Yuletide. The command said tactical units have been deployed to critical areas, including waterways, recreational centres and other locations considered vulnerable.
Spokesperson of the command, Grace Iringe-Koko, said the initiative forms part of a broader security plan focused on visible policing, enhanced surveillance and rapid response to threats. She noted that the Commissioner of Police, Olugbenga Adepoju, had directed area commanders and divisional police officers to ensure effective deployments in collaboration with relevant stakeholders.
According to her, police teams have been stationed at entry and exit points, motor parks, hotels, worship centres and other public spaces to deter crime and reassure residents. She added that community engagement has also been prioritised, with traditional rulers, youth groups and religious leaders involved to encourage early intelligence sharing.
Residents were advised to take basic safety precautions during the celebrations, including securing their homes, monitoring children to prevent dangerous activities, and reporting any suspicious behaviour without delay.
The Rivers State Police Command reaffirmed its commitment to protecting lives and property before, during and after the festive season, while extending Christmas and New Year greetings to residents of the state.
