Nigeria has recorded a major international academic milestone after its team emerged with gold medals at the 2026 Spelling Bee World Cup held in Shanghai, China, defeating participants from several countries to claim top honours.

Team Nigeria was represented by four outstanding young spellers—Oluwadamilola Adeolu, Abdurrahman Yusuf, Chinedu Okediachi, and Maryam Yusuf—who qualified for the World Cup after excelling at both the Nigerian and African Spelling Bee championships.
Competing against some of the world’s brightest students, the Nigerian representatives displayed exceptional spelling ability, vocabulary, pronunciation and language mastery throughout the competition, eventually securing the gold medal for the country.
