Two people have lost their lives in a tragic road accident that occurred in Abeokuta, Ogun State, after a speeding vehicle collided with a commercial motorcycle along the busy Leme axis of the city.
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) confirmed the incident, saying the crash involved a Lexus car and a TVS motorcycle, leaving two adult males dead while four other occupants escaped without injuries.
According to the Ogun State Sector Command of the FRSC, the accident happened at about 5:45 p.m. on Monday, prompting an immediate emergency response from rescue officials.
The Corps said its rescue team arrived at the scene within minutes after receiving a distress call, where they evacuated the victims and cleared the wreckage to prevent further disruption to traffic.
Preliminary findings by the road safety agency indicated that excessive speeding was responsible for the fatal collision, which resulted in the deaths of the motorcycle rider and another victim.
The bodies of the deceased were later taken to the State Hospital, Ijaye Mortuary, while officials secured personal belongings recovered from the scene, including an identity card and a mobile phone.
The FRSC appealed to motorists to exercise greater caution on the roads, warning that reckless driving and speeding remain among the leading causes of fatal road crashes across the country.
The agency urged drivers to obey speed limits, remain alert while driving and always consider the safety of other road users, particularly motorcyclists and pedestrians.
Residents around the accident scene described the crash as devastating, noting that the impact drew the attention of passers-by before emergency responders arrived.
The FRSC extended its condolences to the families of the deceased and reiterated its commitment to promoting safer roads through public awareness campaigns, enforcement of traffic regulations and rapid emergency response to road accidents.
