The Independent National Electoral Commission has approved the registration of two new political parties in Nigeria. The move adds to the number of parties expected to participate in the 2027 general election.
The decision was announced after a meeting of the electoral body in Abuja, where applications from several groups were reviewed. The commission said the approval followed a careful screening process.
The two newly registered parties are the Democratic Leadership Alliance and the Nigeria Democratic Congress. Both groups were found to have met the legal and administrative requirements for registration.
INEC explained that it received hundreds of letters of intent from associations seeking to become political parties. Only those that fully complied with the guidelines were considered.
According to the commission, the registration process involved verifying documents, structures, and compliance with electoral laws before approval was granted.
With the addition of the new parties, political activities in the country are expected to expand as more platforms emerge for citizens to express their views.
The commission said certificates of registration would be issued to the new parties to enable them begin full political operations nationwide.
Some political observers believe the development will provide voters with more choices and strengthen democratic participation ahead of the next elections.
Civil society groups also welcomed the move, saying it shows that the democratic space remains open and inclusive.
