The Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, attended a wreath-laying ceremony on Friday to mark the 50th anniversary of the passing of General Murtala Ramat Muhammed.
The event took place at the cenotaph of the late leader in Ikoyi, Lagos. Dignitaries and notable guests gathered to honour the memory of the former Head of State.
During the ceremony, wreaths were laid at the cenotaph in tribute to General Muhammed’s life and leadership. Leaders and attendees observed a moment of remembrance.
General Murtala Muhammed served as Nigeria’s Head of State from July 1975 until his assassination in February 1976. His time in office, though brief, is widely remembered for major reforms and efforts to reshape the country.
At the event, Governor Sanwo-Olu paid tribute to the late general’s contributions to national development and good governance. He stood alongside family members of the late leader and other guests.
Present at the gathering were relatives of General Muhammed, including his daughter, as well as senior government officials and community leaders. They all participated in remembering his legacy.
Many attendees highlighted the importance of remembering leaders who worked to strengthen the nation and inspire future generations. The atmosphere was reflective and respectful.
Officials also used the occasion to encourage citizens to uphold values of unity, service, and courage that the late general championed during his leadership.
