President Bola Tinubu has said Nigeria’s partnership with the United Kingdom remains vital in tackling insecurity, as he prepares to meet British Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
The President noted that discussions during the meeting would focus on Nigeria’s counter-terrorism efforts and challenges affecting regional stability in West Africa.
He made the remarks during a state banquet hosted in his honour by King Charles III at Windsor Castle as part of his official visit to the United Kingdom.
Tinubu said Nigeria faces serious security threats linked to terrorism in the Sahel region, stressing the country’s responsibility in maintaining stability across West Africa.
He added that cooperation with the United Kingdom is important in addressing these threats and strengthening security responses.
The President also recalled his time in exile during the military regime of General Sani Abacha, noting that the UK provided him refuge during that period.
He said British authorities, including the Metropolitan Police, ensured his safety after threats were made against him by agents of the military government.
Tinubu expressed appreciation for the support, describing it as a gesture Nigeria still remembers.
He said it was significant for him to now stand before the British monarch as the leader of a democratic Nigeria.
The President further highlighted the long-standing relationship between both countries, especially in areas such as governance and legal systems.
He noted that Nigeria’s institutions still reflect elements of British traditions, including the use of English common law and parliamentary practices.
Tinubu also pointed to the contributions of Nigerians living in the UK, especially in the health sector and sports.
He described the visit as historic, noting that it is the first by a Nigerian President to the UK in decades and is expected to strengthen ties between both nations.
