Nigeria’s foreign service has been thrown into mourning following the death of ambassador-designate to Algeria, Mohammed Mahmud Lele, who passed away at the age of 50.
The Federal Government confirmed the development on Wednesday through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, noting that the career diplomat died in the early hours of April 19, 2026, in Ankara, Türkiye, after a prolonged illness.
Lele’s death comes shortly after his appointment by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as Nigeria’s envoy to Algeria, a position he was yet to formally assume despite receiving Senate confirmation.
Until his nomination, he served as Director overseeing the Middle East and Gulf Division at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, where he played a key role in shaping Nigeria’s diplomatic engagements in the region.
Over the years, the Bauchi State-born diplomat built a career that saw him represent Nigeria in several countries, including Germany, Togo, and Saudi Arabia, earning a reputation for strategic thinking and commitment to national interests.
Senior officials in the ministry described his passing as a major setback, with Permanent Secretary Dunoma Umar Ahmed noting that Lele’s dedication and humility stood him out among his peers.
His remains were received in Abuja before being moved to Kano, where he was laid to rest on Wednesday in line with Islamic rites.
The government extended condolences to his family, colleagues, and the people of Bauchi State, describing his death as a significant loss to Nigeria’s diplomatic community.
